What kind of player are you? - poker article by Rory Monahan
| By Rory
Monahan, www.Texas-Holdem-Secrets.com So you're at a local money game and you seem to see the same faces, night after night after night. The opponents you play against know that you are a strong player, but they also seem to know your style and your betting patterns. This will happen to any player that plays against the same guys from game to game. Warning: You CANNOT let yourself become this type of player. If you do, you're going to find it very hard to win on a consistent basis. So what can you do? That's simple...You mix it up.Lets say you're dealt AJ and you make a rather large preflop raise that two players call. The flop hits J,J,3 and you're first to act. Your 1st instinct tells you to slow play the hand by checking. Then you must hope that one of the other opponents tries to buy the pot. However, you must remember that these guys know your betting style so they EXPECT you to slow play the J if you have it. So instead, you fire out a very large bet that makes it look as though you're trying to buy the pot.Josh mucks his hand and the action is on Drew, who is holding pocket 10's. He thinks you're full of s@&%, so he goes over the top of your bet. He actually feels as though you're AFRAID of the Jacks on the board, so he is going to try and represent them. Now what do you do? Should you go back over the top? No.Call very quickly to make it look as though he's got the upper hand in the pot. The turn hits and it's a 4, which you know is no help to Drew. The action is on you again and this time you play with your chips as though you're going to fire out a bet. Then you say, "I'm going to check to the raiser." This always seems to draw another bet. Sure enough, Drew fires again. You call. The river hits and it's another 4 which gives you a full house. Without hesitation you say "I'm all in." You didn't want to check again because Drew might have thought something was up if you checked to him 2 times. He might have given up and also checked. Instead, he's now VERY confused with the way the hand played out but has to call because he's pot committed. He calls, and you rake a huge pot. This all happened because you made an UNUSUAL PLAY by betting your trips on the flop. Drew thought you were bluffing and you took his chip stack. Mix up your play and your opponents will never be able to put you on a hand. For more tips and strategies for Texas Hold 'Em poker - click this link now: http://www.Texas-Holdem-Secrets.com/mix |
