Hole cards worth playing against a raise pre flop

your in your first Texas hold em game and you are either
sitting with one of the pocket hands described earlier or
you have folded your pile of rubbish like 5 9 offsuit. You may think great I have some good cards but then one or more people at the table raise the pot - now a raise is a raise to me and unless its further on into a tournament and your pile of chips is taking a hammering then whether its a big raise or a small raise my advice would be the same. There are certain hands I would keep from the list earlier that you would be quite happy to raise yourself or call a raise from someone else - at this point it is worth mentioning if you end up with two aces pre flop and are subject to someone else raising first then get you chips into the middle i.e all in. Hands to keep against a raise Any pair 9 or above
A with K , Q , J , 10
K with Q , J or 10
Q with A , K , J or 10 Kicker
J with A , K , Q or 10
A flush draw ( whats a Flush Draw ) with a picture card so : A , K , Q , J any card spades for example
All the other types of cards you can be dealt in the hole in my opinion are not worth keeping - this is when your patience needs to kick in as it may even have been your blind bet and the raise is only another 20 or 40 chips to call and you have 5 6 diamonds a hand that on a flat call I said you should keep - 9 times out of ten the raiser will have position and when the flop comes you have nothing - he bests big you fold - your extra chips are gone to the wind. If you stick to only calling raises with these cards above then you will last a lot longer in a tournament and luck will have more of a habit of finding you when you are playing the better cards. It is worth mentioning that position changes a lot of what is stated above so dont blindly always play these cards but read some articles on position to complement whats said above and add interpretation to a live game situation - remember you are not a robot! |
